Spicule formation in calcareous sponges: Coordinated expression of biomineralization genes and spicule-type specific genes

In the study, five genes involved in biomineralization of calcareous sponges were identified, and the changes in their spatial and temporal expression patterns during spicule formation were observed. Two genes are specificly expressed in cells forming calcareous spicules of distinct shapes.
